Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy

Predicting the future has been an unfulfilled dream of humankind for millennia. Yet while we yearn for a bright outlook, envisioning something profoundly dark always seems to have been far more realistic. Rarely upbeat, the futures predicted in the complementary film genres of science fiction and fantasy speak to the fears of societies that seems never to have learned from their past errors. But as mega-franchises ranging from Batman and Transformers to manga adaptations like Akira and Ghost in the Shell illustrate, our Hollywood future seems destined to be chock full of automobiles regardless of what form it takes.
